This book will teach you the fundamentals. That book will transform you into an artist. But as for the tracing thing – oh please.

I’m sure that Loomis could have absolutely gotten away with it, but why on earth such a brilliantly skilled artist, who not only has mastered anatomy and perspective but has a strong handle on form and light would need to trace is absolutely beyond me – actually I would pay to see his traced drawings!

Get this book in printed form and just do the work. You won’t regret it!! I am not an artists into drawing or a professional one. My only take on this book is that it showed me how to properly use lighting to create depth as I sculpt my character’s body, the head, torso, limbs, legs, feet, ear, etc If you are into 3D sculpting I recommend having this book as references.

Wonderful book, exactly what I was needing. Nothing can compare to having the book in front of you to work from. The book is structured well and I’ve already improved greatly, just from chapter one!

Loomis can be a bit word heavy in sections but leaves the exercises without clear direction, however the book is entertaining to read and the techniques easy to pick up and figure out yourself.

There was an interesting point in a review that I had read, which noted that since the book is outdated and old fashioned in style, the proportions of the figures are idealised and unrealistic. As an example, he teaches that a womans waist is around the same width of a head.

However, as he states in the book, the exercises aren’t to copy him line by line, but how to do it yourself. He teaches you the technique, from there your own intelligence should get you to drawing your own preferred proportions. Brilliant book for anyone wanting to get a handle on figure drawing from the ground up! I was disappointed but have only myself to blame for not reading the more negative reviews or watching reviews videos before asking for it!

It’s full of very dated, stereotype figures of slim sexy women and muscly young men! Not what I wanted from a life drawing book at all. It was a Christmas present which I’d asked for too, silly me! I’ll give it to my local library! Although a little dated, the principles are still the same. What I would say is that it is worth combining these books with using YouTube videos to help you along your drawing journey.

The book is especially brutal to men. Most of the book is eaten up by endless walls of text. Really there was nothing to be learned and this is definitely not good for anyone with ADHD or that wants to get on with it. This is something pretentious people leave on their coffee tables and pretend to have read.

I have seen many copies of the original volumes in libraries and I believe the reprints to be higher quality than the originals. Going to art college my friends and I had to settle for third and forth generation photocopies made from borrowed copies; it was impossible to buy copies of Loomis’ books. Now thanks to these wonderful reproductions Mr. Loomis is training up a whole new army of artists! As a beginner drawer this book is helping me further my passion.
